My work begins with a question about relationships: how does theatrical meaning come into being when different materials meet—a dramatic text and an oral tale, a body and an object, a live image and a recorded one, a performer and an audience?

What can theatrical imagination do as material moves from story to text, to body, to image, and to the audience?

When a story, image, action, or sensory element moves from one medium into another, I want to know what remains, what changes, what disappears, and what new relationships become possible.

I have directed established dramatic literature—Sophocles, Strindberg, Caryl Churchill, Ins Choi—alongside devised, immersive, and media-integrated performance. I treat these traditions as resources that can work together. Directing, for me, includes interpretation, and it also includes composition: selecting, arranging, repeating, removing, and relating materials so that something new can happen in the room.

In rehearsal and in the classroom I return to a few working principles: observe what is actually happening before interpreting it; turn observations into questions; compose the relationships among elements; test choices under specific conditions; and take responsibility for deciding what to keep, change, or discard.

Living and working between South Korea and the United States shapes how I approach materials, collaboration, and representation. I understand cultural identity as something continually remade through encounter, and I bring that transcultural experience into the studio as an artistic resource.

My current research tests a working hypothesis: that theatrical imagination acts as a sensory, translational process through which material moves among oral narrative and myth, dramatic text, embodied performance, digital imagery, and audience experience, gathering new meanings as it moves. This remains an open, evolving inquiry. I pursue it through prototype performances, workshops, courses, and collaborative creation, including recent research on AI-integrated live performance.

As Associate Professor of Directing at Carnegie Mellon University, I bring this inquiry into the training of MFA directors.

Every established practice I have learned from has given me something real to build on. With collaborators and audiences, I want to keep expanding what directing can imagine, create, teach, and make possible.
