I direct by composing relationships—among texts and stories, bodies and objects, images, space, sound, media, and audiences—so that theatrical meaning can emerge and transform in performance.나는 관계를 구성하는 방식으로 연출한다. 텍스트와 이야기, 몸과 사물, 이미지와 공간, 소리와 미디어, 그리고 관객 사이의 관계를 짜서, 연극적 의미가 공연 안에서 생겨나고 변화하도록 한다.
Yong Suk Yoo is Associate Professor of Directing in the John Wells Directing Program at the Carnegie Mellon University School of Drama, where he teaches MFA Directors’ Lab and co-teaches Expanded Theater with Lawrence Shea and Chelsea Warren and Scenography with Dick Block and Chelsea Warren. He serves on the Season Selection Committee, representing the Directing Area, and advises departmental productions directed by MFA students. A Korean-born director, devisor, and writer trained at Hanyang University and CalArts, he co-founded independent theatre companies in Seoul and has made work across dramatic literature, devised and immersive performance, Korean folklore, and digitally mediated theatre in South Korea and the United States.유용석은 카네기멜론대학교 드라마스쿨 존 웰스 연출 프로그램의 연출 전공 부교수입니다. MFA Directors’ Lab을 가르치고, Lawrence Shea, Chelsea Warren과 Expanded Theater를, Dick Block, Chelsea Warren과 Scenography를 함께 가르칩니다. 연출 분야를 대표해 시즌 선정 위원회에서 활동하며, MFA 학생들이 연출하는 학과 공연을 지도합니다. 한양대학교와 CalArts에서 수학한 한국 출신 연출가·디바이저·작가로서, 서울에서 독립 극단들을 공동 창단했고, 한국과 미국에서 희곡 연출부터 디바이징·이머시브 공연, 한국 설화, 디지털 매개 연극까지 폭넓게 작업해 왔습니다.

I believe directing education should give students a rigorous command of established theatrical practice and, with it, the capacity to discover possibilities those models have not yet imagined. Students learn to formulate directorial questions, test possibilities through actual performance, observe what occurs, and make informed artistic decisions of their own.저는 연출교육이 학생들에게 확립된 연극적 실천을 엄밀하게 익히게 하고, 그 토대 위에서 기존의 모델이 아직 상상하지 못한 가능성을 스스로 발견하는 역량을 길러야 한다고 믿습니다. 학생들은 스스로 연출적 질문을 만들고, 실제 공연을 통해 가능성을 실험하며, 일어나는 일을 관찰하고, 이를 바탕으로 자신의 예술적 선택을 판단합니다.
