Philosophy of Teaching
I believe directing education should give students a rigorous command of established theatrical practice and, with it, the capacity to discover possibilities those models have not yet imagined.
Every artistic tradition carries knowledge shaped by generations of practice, experimentation, and achievement. I regard that knowledge as an essential foundation for directing education. Yet every tradition, method, and definition of excellence is partial; the possibilities of theatre keep reaching beyond any one of them. For me, the responsibility of an educator is therefore twofold: to help students engage rigorously with established artistic knowledge, and to empower them to question, extend, and reimagine what that knowledge can make possible.
This conviction shapes how I understand directing itself.
I approach directing as the interpretation of dramatic literature and as the composition of relationships among texts, bodies, images, objects, spaces, sounds, time, and audiences. A theatrical event emerges through these relationships, and its meaning often comes into focus only in performance. When an image becomes an action, when a story becomes a spatial experience, or when a text encounters a different medium, something may be preserved, transformed, or lost. Each transformation offers an opportunity for artistic discovery.
In my teaching, I encourage students to approach these encounters with curiosity and rigor. Students learn to start from a question and keep interpretation open until it has been tested: they formulate directorial questions, test possibilities through actual performance, observe what occurs, and make informed artistic decisions.
I often organize this process through a recurring cycle:
MAKE → SHOW → OBSERVE → DECIDE → REVISE
Its purpose is to develop independent directorial judgment. Each pass through the cycle sharpens how a director sees, chooses, and revises.
An experiment that misses its intended result can still generate valuable artistic knowledge. What matters is their ability to observe precisely, understand the consequences of their choices, and carry that understanding into the next creative decision.
Equally important is the role of collaboration. I see the rehearsal room as a space where different forms of knowledge meet. Actors, designers, writers, directors, and audiences bring distinct perspectives that can reveal possibilities no single artist could discover alone. I encourage students to listen carefully, engage critically, and take responsibility for their artistic decisions while keeping their individual voices.
Ultimately, I hope to cultivate artists who define their own aesthetic and their own measure of success: artists who possess the imagination to recognize possibilities, the rigor to investigate them, and the judgment to bring them into meaningful theatrical form.
For me, the future of directing education lies in bringing tradition and experimentation, interpretation and invention, artistic freedom and professional discipline into dialogue, and in discovering what becomes possible when these forms of knowledge inform and enrich one another.
MAKE → SHOW → OBSERVE → DECIDE → REVISE

Contemporary Princess Bari
A theater project that reinterprets the Korean legend of Princess Bari through modern diaspora and personal storytelling. High school students and the Korean School Youth Group develop narratives and scenes from their own stories of identity, migration, and personal experience—working as creators, not only performers—and build a final audience-participatory show.
